I made my husband 3 different dorky gifts for Christmas this last year. We are both pretty dorky though so it is ok (remember we did meet playing an mmorpg FFXI).
The first thing I made for Bill was this fancy-schmancy key chain:
ugh! blogger rotated a few pictures that it should have....
I really wanted to write "I love you most, forever" on the back in binary code - but it was 2 lines of 40 characters and quite honestly I cant write that small. So I just wrote it on the back with a silver sharpie then put a thin layer of modge podge on it so the words wouldn't rub off.
Remember in my last post I wrote about always wondering about that one present under the tree - well for Bill the present that drove him crazy was this key chain.
I am glad that my dad helped teach me to warp things creatively - sure adds to the puzzlement.
The next thing I made for Bill was a photo cube - computer geek style. Silly blogger turned this picture for some reason too...
I just took 6 old 3.5 inch diskettes and hot glued them into a cube (though it takes a little tweaking as you do this because they are not square). After I built the cube I took a 1 inch sponge paint brush and gave it a thin coat of white paint. Then I took our pictures that we had taken in October and cut them to the size of diskette labels and modge podged them into place. To finish it off I gave the whole thing a coat of modge podge. I used 5 pictures in total and then used an actual diskette label on one side and wrote a message on that one.
The 3rd thing that I made for Bill is the present that made him cry when he opened it. I made him 3 little signs:
The first one says "we met" and has a map of Vana'diel, the world in which we "met."
The second one says "we married," and is a satellite view of the Draper Utah LDS Temple (to read more about temples go here).
And the third says "we live" and is a satellite (thanks google earth) view of our apartment complex.
I bought the wood signs and hearts and paint (it is "french white" not just white) at hobby lobby. Painted the signs and hearts with my handy foam brush. I ended up painting 6 hearts and gluing two together for each because I liked them better that way. Printed the pictures on white cardstock, cut them to size AND (I hope this doesn't shock you too bad) modge podged them to the hearts. Next I hot glued the hearts to the signs and the very last thing I did was write on them.
I wrapped each one individually then placed each in a brown paper lunch bag and numbered them and then stuck them all in a bigger box for Bill to open. I did tell him that just because the "we live" sign has a picture of where we currently live in Smyrna Georgia doesn't mean that we have to live here forever now - that I can easily change the picture!
very cute dorky gifts! love the creativity!
